Nhon Ly at a glance

Nhon Ly is a working fishing village on the Phuong Mai peninsula, north of the city center. The national tourism site lists Nhon Ly, Nhon Hai and Trung Luong together as the fishing villages of this coast. Most visitors pass through on the way to the cliff path at Eo Gio or the beach at Ky Co, but the harbor and the lanes behind it are worth a slow half hour.

A note on names: since 1 July 2025 the old commune of Nhon Ly belongs to the ward of Quy Nhon Dong, together with Nhon Binh, Nhon Hoi and Nhon Hai. People still say Nhon Ly for the village, and so does this guide. Nhon Ly is no longer a separate commune on official maps.

Getting to Nhon Ly

The route runs out of town and over the Thi Nai bridge.

From the city, the road to Nhon Ly crosses the lagoon on the Thi Nai bridge and follows the coast north-east. A local tour company describes this as the standard way to Nhon Ly, Eo Gio and Ky Co. By scooter or taxi it is a short coastal drive from the center. Check the current road conditions after heavy rain: landslides and flooding were reported in and around Quy Nhon on 9 September and on 21 to 22 September 2026, and road status can change from day to day.

If you do not drive, a taxi, a ride-hailing car or a tour with pickup is the practical choice. Agree on the return trip before you set off, because the coast road is quiet in the evening.

What to do around Nhon Ly

A short list, from the village outward.

Walk the harbor and the village

Fishing boats fill the bay, and the village life is the attraction. A small parish church stands near the village. Community tourism with painted village lanes was reported on this stretch of coast up to 2024, so ask locally what is open now. Be polite with the camera: people live and work here.

Eo Gio

The cliff path and viewpoints are a few minutes away on the Phuong Mai side. The path has steps, and the stone is slippery when wet. The park changed operator in 2026. A press report of 27 June 2026 gave VND 30,000 (about $1.20) per visit after a reduction, while other guides still list about VND 22,000 to 25,000 (under $1). Confirm the price at the ticket booth. Ky Co

The beach at the foot of the Phuong Mai hills is reached from here by boat or by a mountain road with a shuttle for the steep last stretch. Fees and what they include vary, so see the Ky Co page before you pay. Ky Co guide โ†’

Hon Seo and Hon Kho

Boat trips to small islands off the coast leave from the harbor area. One operator's Hon Seo day trip meets at Nhon Ly harbor at 8:30 a.m. and lists VND 750,000 (about $30) for guests aged 7 and up, VND 562,500 (about $22) for children aged 3 to 6 and free travel under 3. Car pickup is VND 350,000 (about $14) per direction and per vehicle, not per person. Paying online adds a 15 percent fee, and cash on the day is offered. These are the terms of one operator in 2026, not a harbor tariff. Islands guide โ†’

Phuong Mai dunes and peninsula

A travel agency places the Phuong Mai dunes about 8 km from Eo Gio on the peninsula route. Wind shapes the sand, so the dunes look different from one season to the next. Do not count on a fixed height or on sandboarding, and ask locally about access, parking and any fee before you drive out.

The peninsula also gives open sea views and long empty stretches of coast. Take water and sun protection, because there is little shade on the dunes and the road.

Sea, weather and swimming

Boats and beaches here depend on the sea.

Boats can be cancelled

Rough water can stop boat trips, and a weather promise from a tour company is not an official clearance. The tropical storm season in Vietnam runs from May to November, according to UK travel advice updated in September 2026. A local island operator warns of postponements in rough seas from October to December. Plan a spare day.

Wet and dry months

The 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Quy Nhon show the heaviest rain in October (about 492 mm) and November (about 533 mm). February and March are the driest, with about 30 mm and 26 mm. See the weather guide for the full table.

Swimming

A local report of April 2026 describes rip currents and swimmers going outside the marked zone, and beach profiles that changed after the storm of November 2025. Eo Gio is a place to walk and look, not to swim. Where a beach has lifeguards, stay inside the buoys and follow the flags.

Corals and turtles

Around Nhon Hai, local groups protect reefs, and the core reef is closed. Snorkeling is allowed in the buffer area. A 2025 report mentioned a community contribution of VND 10,000 (about $0.40) per snorkeler and trip. Keep your hands and fins off the coral and stay away from turtle nesting areas.

Plan your day

A simple day for Nhon Ly: leave the city early, walk Eo Gio while the paths are quiet, have lunch in the village and spend the afternoon at Ky Co or on a boat. For more on food, see what to eat in Quy Nhon. If you want more beach choices, the beaches guide compares the options. More ideas for the area are on the things to do page. The coast south of here belongs to Phu Yen, which has its own guide: Phu Yen travel guide.

Nhon Ly: frequently asked questions

Where is Nhon Ly?

On the Phuong Mai peninsula north of Quy Nhon. Ky Co is about 25 km north-east of the former city center, and the road runs through Nhon Ly. Since 1 July 2025 the village is part of the ward of Quy Nhon Dong.

Is Nhon Ly worth a visit on its own?

For most people it is a stop on a longer day with Eo Gio, Ky Co or an island trip. The harbor and the village are worth a short walk, but it is not a resort town.

How much does Eo Gio cost?

A press report of 27 June 2026 gave VND 30,000 (about $1.20) per visit after the new operator cut the price. Other guides list about VND 22,000 to 25,000. Parking is listed at roughly VND 10,000 to 30,000 per vehicle. Ask at the gate for today's price.

Can I swim at Nhon Ly?

Do not count on it. Rip currents and changed beach profiles were reported in 2026, and the cliffs at Eo Gio are not for swimming. Swim only where there are lifeguards and flags, and stay in the marked zone.

When are the Phuong Mai dunes best?

Choose a dry day, go early to avoid the heat and take water.

Do boat trips run every day?

No guarantee. Weather and sea state decide, and storms can interrupt trips between May and November. Confirm the booking the day before.
